Cellist Gabriel Cabezas is a prolific and sought-after soloist and collaborator, acclaimed for his artistry, charisma, and versatility. Equally at home in cornerstone cello repertoire and newly commissioned works, he was named one of the Washington Post’s “Composers and Performers to Watch” and has appeared with leading orchestras throughout the United States and abroad.

Cabezas is widely recognized for his creative partnership with composer Gabriella Smith. Their album Lost Coast—music responding to climate change—was named one of NPR Music’s Favorite Albums of 2021 and highlighted by The New York Times as a “Classical Album to Hear Right Now.” Released on the Bedroom Community label, the project continues to evolve in live performance. In 2025–26, the duo appears at the Walker Art Center, LA Phil’s Green Umbrella series, Seattle Symphony’s Octave 9, and San Francisco Symphony’s SoundBox.

Cabezas premiered Smith’s concerto Lost Coast with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Gustavo Dudamel in 2023. Upcoming performances include the UK premiere with the BBC Philharmonic, appearances with the Seattle Symphony (where he serves as Artist in Focus), and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under Esa-Pekka Salonen.

A member of the genre-defying sextet yMusic, Cabezas collaborates regularly with artists across classical, pop, and dance, and appears on the ensemble’s recent self-composed album YMUSIC. He also co-founded Owls, whose debut album Rare Birds (New Amsterdam Records) was released in 2025.

Cabezas is an in-demand studio musician and a recipient of the Sphinx Medal of Excellence. He studied at the Curtis Institute of Music.
